Your Two Day Windermere Itinerary by Langdale Chase

7 November 2017

If you find yourself with a couple of days to spare, a short break in Windermere is the perfect way to spend them. Home to the largest natural lake in England, Windermere has an abundance of attractions and activities to keep you busy, so have a look at our two day itinerary below for some of our recommendations before you head out to explore.

Day One

On arrival, you’ll be in awe of the natural beauty that Windermere has to offer, so there’s no time to waste as the vast Lake and surrounding mountains call to you to discover their charm.

Take a trip on Lake Windermere

It’s one of the most iconic and well-known places in the Lake District, so it’s only right that you head out and experience being on the Lake itself. Head down to the lakefront, where you can discover its magnificent beauty at your own pace. Choose a traditional wooden rowboat or go for a self-driven power boat, and experience the sheer magnitude of Lake Windermere. As you head out, you’ll be guaranteed some of the best views of the area; the lake contains 18 islands so why not see how many you can spot! For an even more relaxing way to travel, why not venture out on a classic Windermere cruise boat and visit the nearby town of Ambleside – it’s just the ticket if you’d like your journey to take you that little bit further.

Explore Bowness-on-Windermere

After a morning on the lake, you’ll want to head into Bowness-on-Windermere. It’s the most central town on the lake and is filled with a variety of gift shops and speciality retailers. And of course, you won’t have to look far to find yourself a place to unwind with a pot of tea and a delicious slice of cake! It’s everything you’d imagine a Lake District town to be so stroll around and take in the sights of St. Martin’s Church, The World of Beatrix Potter and The Old Laundry Theatre.

Enjoy a relaxing meal at Langdale Chase Hotel

To end your day in style, head back to your hotel and enjoy a meal in the restaurant. Locally sourced ingredients and fantastic hospitality will offer you a true taste of The Lakes.  After all that fresh air, have a relaxing evening, followed by a good night’s sleep and recharge your batteries, ready for day two in the great outdoors.

Day Two

Get out and explore Windermere’s walks

After the gentle pace of day one, make the most of your second day and head out on one of the classic Windermere walks. There’s so many to choose from, you’ll struggle to decide which one to tackle first! A firm favourite, with it being the first fell Wainwright climbed, is to start with the circular Orrest Head route. You’ll be amazed by the glorious panoramic views not only of Lake Windermere, but also the many surrounding fells. Pack a picnic and a flask of tea, settle down on your tartan rug and soak up the spectacular sights for miles around.

After the Climb – Visit the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway

For a great end to your Windermere trip (and to put your feet up after the morning’s exercise!), travel the short distance to Lakeside at the southern tip of the lake where you’ll see the impressive Lakeside & Haverthwaite steamer train. Jump aboard and you’ll be transported back in time as you travel towards Haverthwaite taking in the impressive views. With regular train times, it’s a great activity to do and one that the Lake District is famous for. Travel back on the celebrated train and finish your day with a hearty Cumbrian meal.

Get the most out of your short break where you’ll never be lost for things to do in Windermere; the only problem is, it’ll leave you wanting to come back for more!
