We’re coming to the end of a fantastic Lake District Summer, filled with fun, adventure, festivals and celebrations! We counted down 10 ways to spend an unforgettable summer here in the Lakes and challenged you to see the National Park in a new light.

We’ve loved seeing all of your summer photos as you tackled the Lake District summer challenges!
This season we’ve seen record highs of sunshine with weeks of continuous hot weather spreading across the fells and warming the lakes just in time to get outdoors and explore.

The landscape has been alive

Festivals like Kendal Calling and Keswick Mountain Festival have brought locals and visitors together to celebrate in the region.

Competitors made a splash at the Great North Swim, which was held at the Lake District Visitor Centre, Brockhole-on-Windermere, for the first time.

We’ve been out and about at some fantastic local events including Lowther Show, Hawkeshead Agricultural Show and Herdwick Fell Gather.

New experiences have launched

A brand new restaurant, The Gaddum, opened its doors to a new dining experience set upon the shores of Windermere this year. A selection of delicious dishes are on offer, including a beautiful afternoon tea service.

Restoration work at Coniston Copper concluded and a series of new walking routes launched just in time for summer, allowing walkers to explore the stunning landscape and take a step back in time to learn all about its heritage.

We’ve been celebrating

This summer marked one year since the Lake District received World Heritage Site status and to celebrate we worked with north-west poet Tony Walsh to create a very special short-film, Reflecting On The Lakes.

On 13 August, 67 years to the day since the Lake District became a National Park, we shared the short-film far and wide in the hope that the emotive words of Tony Walsh would help to inspire people to help us look after this wonderful place.

Summer may be over, but autumn is just as fun in the Lakes!

Lakes Alive is a great way to see in the new season with this celebration of Cumbrian culture.  

The weekend long festival, this year running 7 – 9 September, descends on Kendal each year bringing with it a packed schedule of free performances, workshops and installations.

Kick off proceedings at Jacobs Join, a unique dining experience alongside the River Kent.
