As dark days grow longer and the weather turns wintry read about the different ways we can help you stay safe on the Lakeland fells.

Know before you go

Preparation is vital for safe winter walking. Taking the right clothing and equipment, and knowing how to use a map and compass are essential to reduce risk. We run a number of basic navigation courses throughout the year. You can check dates and details on our events calendar. There's lots of information on our checklist for walkers page to help you prepare for those fabulous fell days. Mountain rescue websites are a valuable resource too.

We're used to rapidly changing weather conditions here in the Lake District and know how easy it is to get caught out. Fix the Fells

The Fix the Fells programme has been protecting the spectacular Lakeland fells from erosion by maintaining and repairing paths since 2001. As a result there are now hundreds of fell paths right across the Lake District in a better state of repair. Fix the Fells Ranger Richard Fox says: "repaired paths are naturally easier and more pleasant to follow and therefore contribute to safer walking."
