Lake District National Park staff have been asked to consider ditching motors on 22 September and support World Car Free Day.
The international initiative has been running for 17 years and authority workers and members of the Lake District National Park Partnership are being encouraged to join in.
The Lake District has a great track record for promoting sustainable travel, with projects such as Low-Carbon Lake District, Go Lakes and See More.
LDNP carbon reduction adviser, Martin Sleath, said cycle to work days had always gone down well with staff and that it was good to crank it up to another level to save carbon.
It’s not about being anti-car, he said. In Cumbria there often isn’t a realistic alternative. This is a nudge to try something different.
There are loads of ways to travel green in the Lakes and as well as boots, boats, buses and bikes, there are trains too.
Come and join us, says Martin. It could become a blueprint for a much bigger car-free day next year, with the concept being rolled out more widely.
Make it fun, support each other with transport options, share cycle and walking routes, try lift-sharing or the bus, and help cut CO2 emissions. There might even be a treat in store for all those taking part!
