The Lake District's World Heritage Bid

22 March 2017

We’ll join an elite list of World Heritage sites – from Egypt’s pyramids and the Taj Mahal to Hadrian’s Wall. Get involved!

What three things add up to make the Lake District a special place?

  1. Our spectacular landscape, shaped by people for thousands of years through farming and industry.
  2. The Lakes drew romantic poets like Wordsworth, artists, adventure seekers and tourists alike – from inspiring picturesque villas and romantic poetry, to simply taking in the view.
  3. As the Lake District grew in popularity, so too did our desire to protect it, sparking the birth of a conservation movement – and the beginning of the National Trust and the National Parks.

The above gives us three key ingredients for World Heritage status.
