Five great guided walks in and around Ambleside

Ambleside, at the north end of Windermere lake, has long been a top tourist destination and a popular start point for a number of our favourite guided walks. To tempt you we've a selection here but there's plenty more to choose from, ranging from easy rambles to day long hikes to the highest fell summits.

Walk 1: Coffins, Caves and Crags

The five hour plus guided walk takes in a lofty crag, three lakes, and Rydal cave (enter at your own risk!) Hear tales of old Lakeland and discover tranquil Lily Tarn.

Did you know? The Coffin road or route, which forms part of this walk, was so-called as it was the final journey made by the deceased folk of Rydal to their final resting place in Grasmere churchyard.

Walk 2: Morning walk into Scandale

Just a few hours to spare? This lovely morning stroll winds through the narrow lanes of old Ambleside into the Scandale valley to an old packhorse bridge. Return is by the popular Fairfield Horseshoe path.

Did you know? Tiny 17th century Bridge House over Stock Beck in Ambleside was once an apple store for Ambleside Hall and even housed a family of eight!

Walk 3: Afternoon walk to Todd Crag

Make a day of it and join the afternoon walk too. Includes a short, steep climb but you'll get a spectacular view of Lake Windermere and Great Langdale on a clear day.

Did you know? There used to be a nine hole golf course on Loughrigg Fell. It disappeared in the late 1950s. The old clubhouse still survives as a private house.

Walk 4: Crags, Farms and Woods

Crags, Farms and Woods is one of our popular, easier linear walks starting from Waterhead car park and finishing at Brockhole, the Lake District Visitor Centre. Our guides will take you through Skelghyll Wood to Jenkin's Crag. You can return to Waterhead under your own steam, by boot, bus or boat.

Did you know? Some of Cumbria's tallest trees can be found in these woods on The Champion Tree Trail.

Walk 5:  Farming Valley to a Felltop Ridge

Bag a Wainwright! This hard walk takes you along quiet back lanes to the pretty village of Troutbeck, followed by a steep climb up to Wansfell, before returning to Brockhole. It's a good six hour walk with stunning views of Windermere to reward walkers when they 'top out' on this well-known Wainwright.

Did you know? Wansfell has two 'summits.' The true and higher top is known as Baystones (487m).
