National Walking Month in May 2018 marks two years since the popular circular Lake District route, the Ullswater Way, first opened to the public and since then it’s become a favourite among locals and visitors alike.
In celebration of this milestone hear more from Park Ranger Dylan Jackman, who gives an insight into success of the route and the work being done to look after this frequently trodden path.
The Ullswater Way has long been the ambition of the Ullswater community who were looking for a project to boost the local economy, particularly following Storm Desmond. What followed was the creation of a 20-mile circular route around the Lake and in turn a popular Lake District walk for many.
In fact, an estimated 60,000 people complete the Ullswater Way each year, with many more tackling smaller sections too! It’s been hugely popular and whilst the success of the route has been fantastic, it does mean that much repair work is required to make sure it remains accessible and enjoyable for visitors.
I’m pleased to report that a recent path repair near Maiden Castle has made a big difference, following subsoiling, drainage and surfacing work to improve a section of the route. This project was made possible through generous funding from Ullswater Steamers and we’re really pleased that the project is now complete, just in time for the warm weather setting in!
As the Ullswater Way follows public footpaths and bridleways, crossing some fields too, it can be a very muddy route, which walkers should come prepared for (walking boots are a must!) and as a result there will always be more restoration work needed. The list of maintenance required will continue to grow and we rely on funding and donations to allow the repair work to continue.
As always, we’d be so grateful for any donations made to the Ullswater Way, so that the route can continue to be a great experience for visitors. It has already been incredibly successful so we’re excited to see how the route continues to evolve over the coming years. It certainly is a great day out that I’d really recommend!
May is also National Walking Month so why not tick the Ullswater Way off your list! This route boasts beautiful lake, mountain and waterfall views, with Glenridding to one side and Pooley Bridge to the other, and sections of the route can be enjoyed by bus and boat too, making it a really accessible way for all ages and abilities to explore Ullswater.
