10 ways to enjoy National Parks Week 2017

21 July 2017

The celebrations continue as we welcome the annual National Parks Week for the first times as a World Heritage site!

This year we’re ‘Bringing People Together’ in celebration of the Lake District National Park receiving UNESCO status, and we’d love you to come and celebrate with us.

We’ve lined up a list of things you can do in the Lakes throughout the week (between the 24 and 30 July) so that you can head out and enjoy our beautiful National Park.

1. What better way to kick off the week than by celebrating the new World Heritage status at Brockhole! Visit the stunning new sculpture by Charlie Whinney that has been designed in celebration.

2. Whilst you’re at Brockhole make sure you visit the ‘Evolving Masterpiece’ exhibition. The interactive display tells the story of the Lake District in its bid for World Heritage Site status.

3. So why not make a day of it at Brockhole and enjoy the many activities on site too. There’s something for all the family including Treetop Nets and Treetop Adventure.

4. Just in case we’re struck with a spot of summer rain, the Swallows and Amazons exhibition at Blackwell Arts & Crafts House is definitely worth a visit and can be enjoyed rain or shine. Little tip:Wednesday’s are a great day to visit as their resident storyteller is on site!

5. It wouldn’t be a true National Parks Week without heading out in to the great outdoors! On Monday 24 July you can join a guided walk through Coffins, Caves and Crags starting in Ambleside.

6. Take to the waters to see even more of the Lake District. Coniston Boating Centre has all you need to cycle or sail the area. You can take your pick from bikes, boats, kayaks, canoes, paddle boards and rowing boats.

7. Enjoy every last moment of the summer sun on a Windermere Lake Cruises, Summer Evening Buffet. Talk about fine dining!

8. Said to hold some of the most magnificent views of the Lake District is the Ullswater Way walk. Don’t worry if the 20 miles is a little off-putting, you can hop on the steamer to along the way!

9. After all that adventuring you won’t want to miss a moment of the beautiful outdoors so pitch up a tent and spend the night in the UK’s newest World Heritage Site. There are plenty of campsites to choose from and if roughing it isn’t for you there’s are even glamping options too!

10. Finish off the week with the ultimate celebration at Kendal Calling! Between the 27 and 30 July world class musicians will take to the stage for the renowned festival held in our very own National Park.

We’d love to see what you get up to this National Parks Week so please keep us updated and share plenty of pics using #NationalParksWeek and #WeAreTheLakes.
